01Season and piercings
Unlike tattoos, piercings can be done in any season, but certain periods are more suitable than others. The main enemy of fresh piercings is stagnant water (pool, sea, hot tub) — so avoid booking a piercing 4-8 weeks before a seaside vacation.
Winter and autumn are ideal for piercings, for two reasons: long clothes protect the piercing from friction and dust, and the risk of sweating (which favours infection) is minimal. For body piercings (navel, intimate, nipple), winter is actually recommended.
Spring is also a good choice. Spring fever gives you energy and optimism, the immune system is active, healing is faster. Just be careful with spring allergies — if you have severe allergic rhinitis, avoid nose piercings (nostril, septum) in April-May.
Summer is less recommended for body piercings (navel, intimate) — sweating and loose clothes increase the risk of infection. For ear and face piercings, summer is acceptable, but avoid direct sun exposure on the fresh area for 4 weeks. Also avoid the sea and pool for at least 4-8 weeks.
At Funky Tattoo we're open year-round: Mon-Fri 10-21, Sat-Sun 13-18. The studio is air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter, so execution conditions are optimal in any season. Call +40 731 525 808 to book.
02Life events and piercings
Like tattoos, piercings fit well at certain life moments and poorly at others. Here's a quick map:
Right moment:
- After a major achievement (graduation, new stable job) — piercing as symbolic reward
- Before a new stage (move, look change) — marking a threshold
- When you're in a stable emotional and financial period — you'll have resources for care
Wrong moment:
- Before scheduled surgery (even dental) — risk of systemic infection
- During a cold or flu — the immune system is already busy
- 4 weeks before a seaside vacation — sea and pool are forbidden
- Before a wedding where you're the bride/groom — insufficient healing time
Piercing and pregnancy: new piercings are forbidden during pregnancy (risk of infection, local anaesthesia forbidden, risk of not being able to take antibiotics easily). Existing belly piercings usually need to be removed in the 3rd trimester — the skin stretches and the jewellery may migrate or cause discomfort. Nipple piercings need to be removed 2-3 months before birth for breastfeeding; the canal will close, but can be re-pierced after weaning.
Piercing and sport: avoid new piercings if you practise contact sports (boxing, judo, MMA) or sports with tight headphones (swimming, cycling). For ear piercings, wait 8-12 weeks before resuming sport with a helmet or headphones. For body piercings, avoid friction sports (abdomen, squats) for 4-6 weeks.
Piercing and workplace: certain professions forbid visible piercings (military, aviation, certain corporations). Check your employer's dress code before getting a visible piercing (nose, lips, eyebrows). For discrete piercings (helix, conch, daith), there are usually no problems.
