When to get a tattoo — the perfect timing

Season, health status, and life events matter more than you think. Choose the right moment.

01Ideal season: autumn and winter

Autumn and winter are the best seasons for a tattoo, for a simple reason: sun is enemy #1 of fresh ink. A tattoo done in November has 4-6 months of "weak sun" before the summer season, during which the ink fixes deeply in the skin. By the first strong sun exposure, the tattoo is fully healed and ready to last.

Spring is also a good choice — especially March and April. However, avoid May if you know you'll go to the seaside in June; the tattoo needs a minimum of 30 days before sun exposure with SPF, and 60+ days before you can lie on the beach worry-free.

Summer is the worst season for a tattoo. The reasons are many: increased sweating keeps the skin moist and slows healing, accidental sun exposure destroys fresh ink, the sea and pool are completely forbidden for 30 days, summer's loose clothes expose the tattoo to friction and sun. If you absolutely must get a tattoo in summer, book it at the start of the season (June) to have 30+ healing days before vacation.

At Funky Tattoo we're open year-round: Mon-Fri 10-21, Sat-Sun 13-18. The studio is air-conditioned in summer and heated in winter, so execution conditions are optimal in any season. Book at +40 731 525 808 at least 2-3 weeks in advance, especially during busy season (October-November and February-March).

02Health status — when NOT to get a tattoo

There are moments when your body isn't ready for a tattoo, no matter how much you want one. Recognising these situations protects your health and the tattoo's quality. At Funky Tattoo we refuse sessions if we see clear signs of contraindication — not to upset you, but to protect you.

When to postpone the tattoo:

  • You have a cold, flu, fever — your immune system is already busy
  • Menstrual period on the first day — pain and bleeding are amplified
  • You're pregnant — absolutely forbidden, regardless of trimester
  • You've consumed alcohol in the past 24 hours — it thins the blood
  • You've taken anticoagulants (aspirin, ibuprofen) in the last 48 hours

Absolute medical contraindications (see our complete restrictions guide): haemophilia, untreated HIV, active hepatitis, severe autoimmune diseases, confirmed allergy to tattoo pigments, skin conditions in the tattoo area (eczema, active psoriasis). For these situations, a tattoo is not an option — discuss alternatives with your doctor (e.g. henna, jagua).

Relative contraindications (require written medical approval): diabetes (depending on blood sugar and area), cardiovascular diseases, immunosuppressive treatments, pregnancy to 6 months postpartum, breastfeeding. For these cases, Funky Tattoo requests written approval from your treating physician before booking the session.

If you're not sure whether a medical condition contraindicates you, call us at +40 731 525 808 or email contact@funkytattoo.ro. We'll talk openly, without judgement, and guide you correctly.

03Life events and timing

Certain life moments call for tattoos; others, on the contrary, contraindicate them. Here's a quick map of timing based on what you're going through.

Right moment:

  • After a major breakup — the tattoo as a rebirth ritual; use it, but don't tattoo your ex's name
  • After a significant loss (death, illness) — the commemorative tattoo is one of the oldest functions of tattooing
  • After a major achievement (graduation, marathon, birth) — marking a threshold
  • Before an important trip — the tattoo as an amulet

Wrong moment:

  • The night after a party — alcohol, fatigue, unstable emotional state
  • During a life crisis (ongoing divorce, layoff) — decisions made under stress are frequently regretted
  • Before a wedding with less than 30 days — the tattoo may irritate under the dress/suit
  • Before scheduled surgery — you risk infection and interfere with anaesthesia

Tattoo and pregnancy: existing tattoos on the belly may distort during pregnancy (the skin stretches a lot), but often return to original shape after birth, though they sometimes need a touch-up. New tattoos are forbidden during pregnancy. Tattoos on the back, shoulders, or ankles are not affected by pregnancy.

Tattoo and weight gain/loss: variations of 3-5 kg don't visibly affect the tattoo. Changes of over 10 kg can distort the design, especially on areas with subcutaneous fat (belly, thighs, arms). If you plan major weight loss, wait until you stabilise before getting a tattoo on those areas.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a tattoo if I'm a minor?
No. At Funky Tattoo we don't tattoo people under 18, not even with parental consent. This is a strict rule, no exceptions. Romanian law doesn't explicitly regulate the age for tattoos, but professional studios apply the 18-year limit to protect both the minor and the studio. For piercing, the limit is 16 years, and under 16 only the earlobe, with a parent present.
