01Age restrictions
Age is one of the few absolute restrictions for piercing. Funky Tattoo applies the following age rules, without exceptions:
Legal ages for piercing at Funky Tattoo:
- Under 16: only ear lobe, with parent present and both with ID
- 16-18 years: all non-intimate piercings, with parent present and with ID
- 18+ years: all piercings, including intimate, without restrictions
Why these limits:
- Under 16, anatomy is not fully developed (especially ear cartilage, nose)
- Until 18, responsibility for care and infections is partial
- For intimate piercings, the 18-year limit is mandatory for legal and ethical reasons
Procedure for minors (16-18 years):
1. The parent (or legal guardian) must be physically present at the session
2. Both ID cards are checked (minor + parent)
3. The minor's birth certificate is required to establish filiation
4. The parent signs informed consent in front of the piercer
5. If parents are divorced, both parents' consent is required
We refuse piercings for minors if: the parent refuses to sign, the parent is under the influence of alcohol, the minor has medical contraindications, or if the requested piercing is in an area we don't do for minors (intimate, nipple, septum for under 16).
For questions about piercings for minors, call +40 731 525 808 or email contact@funkytattoo.ro. We're in Piața Romană, Bucharest, open Mon-Fri 10-21, Sat-Sun 13-18.
02Anatomical restrictions
Not all anatomies allow all piercings. In many cases, what looks visually possible is not technically feasible or risks complications. Our piercer Florian evaluates each case individually at the start of the session.
Common anatomical restrictions:
- Industrial — requires a helix with the right curvature; not all ears allow it
- Navel (belly button) — requires sufficient depth; flat belly buttons don't hold the jewellery
- Septum — requires cartilage "sweet spot" (the soft area between cartilage and skin); variable anatomy
- Daith — requires a sufficiently pronounced cartilage fold
- Snug / Anti-helix — very rarely feasible; depends on the ear's relief
- Nipple — nipple anatomy (inverted, flat, normal) affects feasibility
When we refuse for anatomical reasons:
- The risk of rejection (jewellery pushed out by the skin) is high
- Blood vessels or nerves pass exactly through the desired point
- The skin is too thin or too thick to support the jewellery
- The risk of migration (jewellery moves out of position) is high
Attention to piercings on scars: piercing through an old scar (even from a previously rejected piercing) requires careful evaluation — scarred tissue has different circulation and high risk of rejection. Often, the second attempt works, but it depends on the case.
Piercings on moles and nevi: we don't pierce directly through a mole, but we can pierce near it if the mole is stable and dermatologist-evaluated. Suspicious moles need to be checked beforehand.
For anatomical evaluation, come to the studio for a short consultation — free, no obligation. Call +40 731 525 808 or email contact@funkytattoo.ro. Florian will openly tell you what's feasible and what's not.
03Medical restrictions
Certain medical conditions contraindicate piercing, absolutely or relatively. As with tattoos, we apply strict protocols for your safety. Funky Tattoo is DSP-authorised no. 816/26.07.2022.
Absolute contraindications — we refuse the piercing:
- Haemophilia or other clotting disorders
- Untreated HIV (with detectable viral load)
- Active hepatitis B or C
- Severe autoimmune diseases (active lupus, scleroderma)
- Severe allergy to nickel or titanium (rarer)
- Skin conditions in the piercing area (active eczema, psoriasis, infection)
- Pregnancy
Relative contraindications (require written medical approval):
- Diabetes — healing risks at extremities (ear lobe, navel)
- Severe cardiovascular diseases
- Immunosuppressive treatments (cortisone, chemo, biological)
- Epilepsy (certain areas and lights can trigger seizures)
- Anticoagulant treatment (Sintrom, Warfarin)
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: new piercings are strictly forbidden during pregnancy and the first 6 months of breastfeeding. Existing belly/breast piercings may need to be removed in the 3rd trimester or before breastfeeding.
Medications that affect piercing:
- Isotretinoin (Roaccutan) — stop 6 months before; fragile skin
- Oral corticosteroids >10mg/day — difficult healing
- Anticoagulants — prolonged bleeding
Sensitivities and allergies: if you have a nickel allergy (very common), we use only implant-grade titanium (which contains no nickel). If you have a latex allergy, we use nitrile gloves. Tell us any allergy you know of before the session.
