Confidentiality and protocol
Intimate piercings represent a distinct category, requiring a strict protocol of confidentiality, safety and client comfort. At Funky Tattoo in Piața Romană, Bucharest, we treat each intimate procedure with maximum professionalism — we appreciate that this is a sensitive personal decision and commit to providing a discreet, safe and respectful environment. All intimate procedures are performed by an experienced piercer, with over 8 years of practice in this category.
The protocol begins with a mandatory preliminary consultation, where we discuss the possible anatomical variants (not all types of intimate piercing are feasible for everyone), relevant medical history (allergies, skin conditions, recurrent infections), and expectations. For female piercing, the main variants include clitoral hood (vertical or horizontal), labia majora, labia minora and fourchette. For male piercing, variants include Prince Albert, Apadravya, Ampallang, Frenum, Dydoe and Guiche.
For client comfort and dignity, we work in a separate room from the rest of the studio, with the door closed and no other persons present besides the piercer. On request, a companion (partner, friend) may attend. The curtain is partially drawn during the procedure, exposing only the working area. For female piercing, we use a sterile skin shield that hides the rest of the body. For male piercing, we provide a sterile towel for partial coverage.
Sterilisation is just as important as any other procedure: all instruments (forceps, needle, jewellery) go through autoclave at 134°C for 18 minutes, according to DSP standards (our authorisation no. 816/26.07.2022). For male Prince Albert piercing, which involves traversing the urethra, we use an additional urethral sterilisation protocol with antiseptic solution and temporary catheterisation to prevent urinary infections. Local anaesthesia with EMLA cream is optional, applied 30 minutes before.
Healing of intimate piercings is relatively fast (8-16 weeks for female, 12-24 weeks for male), since the area has rich vascularity and rapidly regenerating tissue. Aftercare includes washing 2-3 times a day with saline solution, avoiding sexual activity in the first 4-6 weeks (for female piercing) or 6-8 weeks (for male piercing), and using a condom for any sexual contact in the first 3 months. Jewellery change (60 RON) is recommended at 8 weeks after the initial piercing and can only be performed by the piercer — do not attempt the change at home, the risk of infection and canal damage is high.
