Nipple piercing — courage and hygiene

Nipple piercing is one of the most personal and intimate piercings — it requires maturity, trust in the piercer and impeccable hygiene. At Funky Tattoo in Piața Romană, Bucharest, we treat nipple piercing with maximum seriousness: we work only with clients over 18 (mandatory ID check), in a separate room, with the door closed, and with a strict confidentiality protocol. No image, no recording, no information about your piercing leaves the room without your written consent.

DSP authorisation is mandatory for any nipple piercing, since the procedure involves deep penetration of the glandular tissue. Funky Tattoo holds a valid DSP authorisation, visibly displayed in the studio, and our main piercer is authorised for intimate and nipple piercing. Always check this authorisation before booking at any studio — nipple piercing performed in an unauthorised studio is a major legal and medical risk.

Age 18+ is strict — we make no exceptions, even with parental consent. We check the ID of every client before piercing, and for clients who look under 25, we request a second identity document. This policy is sometimes unpopular, but it is the only way to respect the law and protect both the client and the studio.

Maximum confidentiality is our fundamental principle. Our intimate and nipple piercing room is separated from the public area, with a closed door and background music. Our main piercer (always the same specialist with over 8 years of experience) explains the procedure in detail before starting, shows you the jewellery, and answers all questions without rushing. You have the right to stop the procedure at any time, even after it has started. For clients who prefer a specific piercer gender (for example, a client who prefers a female piercer), we make this accommodation by appointment — call +40 731 525 808.

The procedure itself takes 5-10 minutes per nipple, with optional local anaesthesia using EMLA cream (applied 30 minutes before, 30 RON). We use ASTM F136 titanium or 316L surgical steel jewellery, in the form of a straight barbell (14 mm for male, 16-19 mm for female, to accommodate initial swelling). Healing takes 12-24 weeks, and in the first 4 weeks the area is sensitive — no intense sports activity, no pressure on the chest (tight belts, backpacks, push-up bras).

Aftercare for the nipple piercing

Aftercare for nipple piercing is more complex than for other piercings, since it involves an area with intense daily contact (underwear, physical activity, sexual activity) and glandular tissue that heals slower. At Funky Tattoo we offer a written aftercare protocol, customised for nipple piercing, with five fundamental rules.

Cleaning with saline twice a day is the basis of aftercare. Apply sterile saline (0.9% NaCl) with a soft paper tissue or a saline spray (H2Ocean, NeilMed) on both faces of the piercing (outer face and inner face, under the nipple). Soak crusts for 2-3 minutes, then gently remove. Avoid alcohol, betadine, peroxide, antibacterial soaps — these destroy newly formed tissue and prolong healing. For cleaning under the nipple, use a cotton bud soaked in saline.

No sexual activity for 4-6 weeks is an unpopular but essential rule. Sexual activity involves direct physical contact with the piercing, sweat, and exchange of fluids that can cause infection. Respecting this rule prevents serious complications that can lead to piercing rejection or severe infection. After 4-6 weeks, sexual activity can be gradually resumed, with attention to pressure on the piercing.

A condom is mandatory for 2 months after piercing, even in a long-term monogamous relationship. The reason: the exchange of fluids (saliva, vaginal secretions, semen) can transfer bacteria into the still-unhealed piercing, causing infection. The condom is not just for preventing pregnancy or STIs — it is a mechanical barrier against oral and genital bacteria that can prolong healing by weeks. This rule also applies to oral sex.

Loose cotton underwear is recommended in the first 8 weeks. Push-up bras, balcony bras, synthetic underwear (polyester, nylon) cause friction and pressure on the piercing. Use soft sports bras (without tight straps) or loose cotton tops, without seams on the nipple area. For men, loose cotton t-shirts are ideal. Also avoid tight belts, backpacks with chest straps, and activities involving thoracic pressure (swimming, weights, boxing) in the first 6 weeks. Other recommendations: no pools, sauna, baths with soap in the first 8 weeks (showers are allowed). No jewellery change in the first 16 weeks — we do it free at the first check-up. Sleeping on the back is recommended in the first 4 weeks. For any concern (extended redness, pain that increases after week 2, yellow-green discharge with odour, fever), call immediately +40 731 525 808 or write to contact@funkytattoo.ro. Funky Tattoo is a DSP-authorised studio in Piața Romană, Bucharest, and post-piercing consultation is free and unlimited in the first 6 months. Our main piercer has over 8 years of experience in nipple piercings.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a nipple piercing take to heal?
Complete healing of a nipple piercing takes between 12 and 24 weeks, but the internal tissue continues to stabilise for another 6-12 months. Male piercing (12-24 weeks, pain 4/5) heals slightly faster than female piercing (12-24 weeks, pain 5/5), since the glandular tissue is less developed. For female piercing, the menstrual cycle can influence sensitivity in the first 3 months — some clients report increased sensitivity during menstruation. At Funky Tattoo we offer a free check-up at 8 weeks after piercing, when we assess the healing stage and, if necessary, replace the initial (longer) jewellery with a shorter one. Strict adherence to the aftercare protocol (saline 2x/day, no sexual activity 4-6 weeks, condom 2 months, loose cotton underwear) reduces healing time by 30-50%. Book at +40 731 525 808 — DSP-authorised studio in Piața Romană, Bucharest.
Does nipple piercing affect later breastfeeding?
Generally, no — but it depends on the placement of the piercing and on healing. At Funky Tattoo we place the nipple piercing at the base of the nipple (not through the tip of the nipple), to minimise the impact on the milk ducts. The milk ducts are the channels through which milk flows from the mammary gland to the nipple, and a correctly placed piercing bypasses them. Most women with a fully healed nipple piercing can breastfeed without problems. **Recommendations**: if you are planning a pregnancy, it is best to remove the jewellery before conception (or at the latest in the second trimester), to allow the tissue to close completely. If you already have the piercing and are pregnant, remove the jewellery in the second trimester and do not put it back until after weaning. For specific questions, we recommend you discuss with your gynaecologist and lactation consultant. At Funky Tattoo we offer free consultation before piercing to assess options — call +40 731 525 808 or write to contact@funkytattoo.ro.
