The 3D illusion technique
3D tattooing uses perspectives, shadows, and highlights to create the illusion that the piece is raised from the skin or sunk beneath it. Most common effects:
- Mechanical buttons — appear to protrude from the skin
- Hardware (screw heads, hinges) — appear fixed to the skin
- Openings — appear to reveal mechanisms beneath the skin
- Flint or wood under skin — texture effect
- Zipper — appears to open the skin
The technique requires an artist with deep understanding of light and shadow — shading is everything. Poor execution becomes flat and unconvincing after 1-2 years.
