Family tattoo ideas
The family tattoo is one of the most requested categories at Funky Tattoo — and the reason is simple: family bonds are permanent, and tattooing is the visual way to honour them. Here are the most popular ideas:
- Names — children's names, partner's, parents'. The most classic family tattoo. Can be integrated into larger designs (banner under a heart, branch with leaves each bearing a name).
- Birth dates — in numeric format (12.05.2020), in Roman numerals (XII.V.MMXX), or in zodiacal format (zodiac symbol + date).
- Family tree — tree with roots and branches, each branch bearing a name. Larger piece, usually on the back or ribs.
- Fingerprints — a small child's fingerprint, a baby's palm print. Extremely personal symbol.
- Corresponding symbols — each family member has their own symbol (a bird, a star, a flower), and the piece integrates them all. For large families.
- Intertwined hearts — several small intersecting hearts, each with a name or initial.
- Family quotes — 'Family first', 'Blood of blood', etc. In clear, legible fonts.
- GPS coordinates — the birthplace of each child, or where the couple met.
- Portraits — B&G realism with children's or parents' faces. The most technical request — requires an artist experienced in realism.
For newborns, we recommend waiting at least 1 month before taking the fingerprint (the baby's skin is too delicate until then).
How to make a successful family tattoo
Family tattoos are among the most regretted — not because the idea is wrong, but because execution allows mistakes that become permanent. At Funky Tattoo we've seen many pieces with misspelled names or illegible fonts brought in for rework. Here are our rules:
- Check spelling — three times. The child's name, the birth date, diacritical marks. In Romanian, diacritics matter: 'Ștefan' ≠ 'Stefan' in intent, even if the pronunciation is the same. We check the sketch together with you before execution.
- Choose clear fonts — avoid excessively decorative fonts, complex Gothic, or cursives that become illegible at small sizes. Sans-serif or classic serif, in sufficient size (minimum 5-7mm letter height for long-term legibility).
- Avoid trends — 'watercolour' over text (the colour shifts and fades the letters), 3D-effect fonts (details get lost), ultra-thin scripts (they thicken and tangle). Choose timeless.
- Place correctly — names and dates need stable areas (forearm, upper back, calf). Avoid fingers, inside of the hand, areas with a lot of friction.
- Document your source — if you tattoo a signature or fingerprint, bring a clear, high-resolution image. Book in advance to allow the artist preparation time.
For family portraits, we recommend our artist specialised in realism, internationally awarded. Book a consultation at +40 731 525 808 or contact@funkytattoo.ro.
