What fine line is
Fine line is the style that has exploded in the last 5 years, especially on Instagram and Pinterest. Defined by thin lines (1-3 round liner needles configured finely), no heavy shading, no thick outlines, fine line privileges delicacy and minimalism.
It's the preferred style for:
- Small, discreet symbols
- Delicate flowers (iris, lily, peony)
- Stylised insects (bees, butterflies)
- Constellations and star maps
- Short quotes in fine fonts
- Contour lines for delicate pieces
At Funky Tattoo we work with 3-5 needle round liners, configured at a 30-45° angle, which produce 0.3-0.5mm wide lines — almost like a fine pen drawing. This finesse requires exceptional motor control, because any wobble is visible at this scale.
Advantages and limits of fine line
Advantages:
- Delicate, feminine, modern aesthetic
- Reduced pain (less ink deposited)
- Faster healing (3-7 days vs. 2-3 weeks)
- Discreet — easy to hide at formal events
- Affordable pricing (small pieces, short time)
Limits:
- Doesn't hold up as well as old school — fine lines can blow out after 5-10 years
- Sun-sensitive — without SPF 50, lines fade quickly
- Doesn't work on very dark skin — contrast drops
- Hard to cover up — if you change your mind, a thin fineline piece is hard to cover without laser
- Requires an experienced artist — many beginners try fine line without the necessary motor control
Recommendation: choose fine line for small (<10cm) and symbolic pieces. For larger pieces or complex motifs, consider a more solid style.
Ideal placement for fine line
Fine line works best on visible areas that are protected from constant sun:
- Inner wrist — classic for small symbols
- Back of finger — subtle, but watch for wear
- Below ear / back of ear — discreet and elegant
- Collarbone — for small horizontal pieces
- Ankle — classically feminine
- Back of neck (nape) — for vertical pieces
- Ribs — for horizontal pieces with quotes or symbols
Avoid: palms, soles (skin regenerates too fast), areas with constant friction (belt, bra).
