The neck tattoo — courage and consequences

The neck tattoo is one of the most visible decisions you can make — even more visible than on the hand, because the neck can't be covered without effort (high-collar shirt, scarf, foulard). At Funky Tattoo we accept neck projects, but always with a serious prior conversation.

  • Maximum visibility — the neck is exposed in all social and professional contexts, except with active effort to cover. It directly affects employability, especially in conservative fields (banking, justice, education, corporations).
  • Hard to hide — even with a high-collar shirt, tattoos on the front of the neck are visible when moving. On the nape, long hair can cover, but not on all occasions.
  • Impact on employability — many companies still have restrictive policies for visible tattoos on the neck and face. Even as society becomes more accepting, certain professions remain conservative. Research the dress code in your field before deciding.
  • Aesthetics and identity — for many, the neck tattoo is a statement: I am an artist, I am a musician, I am a rebel, I am a person who doesn't conform. It's an assumed choice, not an accident.
  • Moderate to intense pain — thin skin, bone close to skin on the front, sensitive nerves. Especially on the larynx and trachea, the machine's vibration is felt throughout the body.
  • Difficult healing — the neck moves constantly (speaking, eating, turning the head), is exposed to irritation from clothes (collar, chains). Increased risk of infection without strict aftercare.

We recommend neck tattoos to people who already have visible pieces, who work in permissive fields, and who understand the long-term consequences.

Areas of the neck for tattooing

The neck is not a uniform area — each part has different characteristics, both in execution and visibility. Here are the areas we work on and our recommendations:

  • Nape (back of the neck) — the most discreet area of the neck. Naturally covered by hair (for men and women with long hair). Thick skin, moderate pain. Perfect for vertical pieces (quotes, aligned symbols).
  • Side of the neck — visible laterally, hard to cover without a scarf. Thin skin, sensitive nerves, intense pain. For small pieces (stars, moons, initials) or for extensions of pieces from the shoulder.
  • Behind the ear — small area, extremely visible. Thin skin, moderate to intense pain. For very small symbols (stars, moons, initials). One of the most photogenic areas.
  • Front of the neck (on the larynx) — the most visible and least recommended area. Very thin skin over the larynx and trachea, intense pain, extreme mobility. Rapid and uneven fading. We recommend avoiding this area.
  • Collar (lower neck area, toward the collarbone) — transition between neck and chest. Can be covered with a collared shirt. Moderate pain. For pieces connecting the neck to the chest.

The hourly rate for the neck is 300 RON — the difference from 250 RON reflects execution complexity, additional preparation time, and the risk of touch-up. Book a consultation at +40 731 525 808 or contact@funkytattoo.ro.

Frequently asked questions

Do neck tattoos really affect employability?
Yes, in conservative fields (banking, justice, education, large corporations, healthcare). Many companies have official policies forbidding visible tattoos on the neck and face. In creative fields (design, IT, marketing, gastronomy, music), the impact is minimal or nonexistent. We recommend researching the dress code in your field before deciding, and choosing a more discreet area (nape) if you have doubts.
Does a neck tattoo fade faster than in other areas?
It depends on the area. On the nape (thick, stable skin), the tattoo holds 10-15 years like on the forearm. On the side and behind the ear (thin skin, exposed to sun), fading is faster — 7-10 years with sun protection, less without. On the front (on the larynx), fading is rapid and uneven, due to extreme mobility. SPF 30+ on the tattoo during sun exposure is mandatory.
