Anatomy of a chest tattoo

The chest is an anatomically complex area — the skin ranges from thick and mobile (upper chest, over the pectoral muscle) to very thin and close to bone (sternum, collarbones). This variation dictates both pain and how ink stabilises.

  • Upper chest (on the pectoral) — thick skin, large muscle underneath. Low to moderate pain. The best area for dense coloured pieces and bold-lined work.
  • Sternum (the central bone) — very thin skin, bone directly underneath. Intense pain. Fine details fade faster here — we recommend pieces with thicker lines or graphic elements.
  • Ribs (under the chest, on the ribcage) — thin skin, sensitive nerves. Intense pain. For extensions of central pieces or long quotes.
  • Collarbone and upper area — bone close to skin, moderate to intense pain. For pieces connecting chest to neck or shoulder.

Healing on the chest takes 3-4 weeks for the superficial layer and 2-3 months for complete colour stabilisation. The area's mobility (breathing, arm movements) slightly slows the process — avoid chest workouts for 2 weeks after the session.

Designs that work on the chest

The chest is a central, naturally symmetrical canvas — designs that use this symmetry work best. At Funky Tattoo we work on chest pieces daily and have a clear list of recommendations.

  • Flaming heart — classic old school, symbol of passion. Perfect centrally on the sternum, with a banner for a name.
  • Anchor — symbol of stability, popular for men. Placed laterally or centrally.
  • Portraits — B&G realism of loved ones. On the pectoral, where thick skin supports detail.
  • Horizontal text — quotes along the collarbone or under the chest. Clear fonts, small-to-medium.
  • Crucifix / religious symbols — placed centrally on the sternum, with personal meaning.
  • Symmetrical compositions — mandalas, sun, skulls, two-headed eagles. Visually connect chest to shoulders.
  • Rose / rose with skull — symbol of beauty and mortality. On the lateral pectoral.

Avoid pieces that are too small and isolated on the sternum — they get lost in the body's centre. Choose either a central symmetrical piece, or a composition that flows on one side (e.g., a floral branch rising from chest to shoulder). Frequently asked questions

How painful is a tattoo on the sternum?
Pain on the sternum is rated 8/10 — very thin skin, bone directly underneath, and the machine's vibration is felt through the whole ribcage. For larger pieces on the sternum, we recommend splitting into 2-3 short sessions (1-2 hours each) instead of one long session. Local anaesthesia isn't practical in tattooing, but controlled breathing and short breaks help significantly.
Does a chest tattoo deform with age or weight changes?
Yes, to some extent. The chest is an area that changes with age (loss of muscle tone) and with weight changes. Central symmetrical pieces suffer less, while large pieces on the pectoral can visually 'drop' if the muscle decreases significantly. Maintaining a relatively stable weight helps enormously in preserving the look.
